Biography & Historical Record
Qin Liangyu (秦良玉, Tần Lương Ngọc) was a prominent female general of the late Ming Dynasty. She is unique in Chinese history as the only woman to be recorded in the official dynastic histories (the Ming Shilu) as a general, rather than just a consort or concubine. Following the death of her husband, Ma Qiancheng (马千乘, Mã Thiên Thừa), who was a local chieftain (Tusi) in Sichuan, she took over his command and led the ‘White-Stave Corps’ (白杆兵) with great distinction. She was renowned for her unwavering loyalty to the Ming throne, especially during the chaotic transition to the Qing Dynasty. Her military prowess was so highly regarded that the last Ming emperors bestowed high titles upon her, including the title of Marquis of Zhongzhen.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Qin Liangyu does not appear in Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as she lived during the Ming Dynasty, over a millennium after the historical events of the Three Kingdoms period. However, she is frequently compared to legendary figures like Hua Mulan or Mu Guiying in Chinese literature.
