Biography & Historical Record
Xu Shu (徐庶, Từ Thứ), courtesy name Yuanzhi, was a native of Yingchuan. Originally a wandering swordsman and scholar who studied in the classics, he participated in a vendetta for a friend and was captured, but later escaped. Following this, he transitioned from a martial life to a civil service path. He befriended Sima Hui (司馬徽, Tư Mã Huy) and Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng). Xu Shu eventually joined Liu Bei (劉備, Lưu Bị) while he was stationed at Xinye. He served as a brilliant strategist, helping Liu Bei defeat the forces of Cao Ren (曹仁, Tào Nhân). His historical legacy is defined by his filial piety; when his mother was captured by Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo), Xu Shu left Liu Bei to save her, ultimately serving Cao Cao as a consultant in the Wei government, where he rose to the rank of Central Palace Secretariat (Zhongshu Shilang).
