Biography & Historical Record
Yang Daiyan (杨大眼, Dương Đại Nhãn) was a formidable general of the Northern Wei dynasty. He was born in Wudu Commandery to a family of Di (氐) descent. He was famous for his remarkable physical prowess and, as his name suggests, his exceptionally large eyes. According to the Book of Wei, when he was young, he was noted for his ability to run as fast as a horse, earning him the nickname ‘Daiyan’ (Large Eyes) as he could stare down enemies with terrifying intensity.
He rose to prominence under Emperor Xiaowen (孝文帝, Hiếu Văn Đế) and Emperor Xuanwu (宣武帝, Tuyên Vũ Đế) of Northern Wei. Yang Daiyan (杨大眼, Dương Đại Nhãn) was best known for his unmatched bravery in the Northern Wei-Southern Qi (南齐, Nam Tề) conflicts. In the Battle of Yiyang (义阳之战, Nghĩa Dương), he led his forces with such ferocity that he became a household name among the Southern dynasties, who feared him greatly. It was said that whenever his banner appeared, the morale of the enemy troops would shatter. Despite his lack of formal education, his tactical instinct and battlefield leadership made him one of the most reliable generals of his era. He eventually succumbed to illness in 518.
