Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Yi was a preeminent strategist and diplomat of the Warring States period, serving as the Chancellor of the State of Qin. A disciple of Guiguzi alongside Su Qin, Zhang Yi became the most famous advocate of the ‘Horizontal’ (Heng) alliance strategy, which sought to align the six weaker states individually with the powerful Qin, thereby breaking their coalition against Qin. He is renowned for his extraordinary eloquence and ability to manipulate geopolitical landscapes through mere words. His most famous achievement involved deceiving the King of Chu, promising 600 li of land to break Chu’s alliance with Qi, only to renege after the alliance was severed, leading to the humiliation of Chu. His life was defined by the ‘Vertical’ versus ‘Horizontal’ (Zong-Heng) conflict that determined the fate of pre-imperial China.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Zhang Yi predates the Three Kingdoms period by centuries, his name is frequently cited in the text as a metaphor for brilliant, albeit treacherous, diplomacy. Strategists like Zhuge Liang and Jia Xu are often compared to him when they engage in complex schemes to isolate enemies or form precarious alliances.
