Biography & Historical Record
Zhu Zan was a military commander and frontline vanguard general serving the Cao Wei state during the late Three Kingdoms period. Historically documented in Chen Shou’s official dynastic history Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei, Biography of Cao Zhen), Zhu Zan was a close personal friend and comrade-in-arms of the Cao Wei Grand Marshal Cao Zhen since their youth. Unlike the dramatic literary account of his death, authentic historical records note that Zhu Zan died prematurely while serving on a military expedition under Cao Zhen, an event that left his lifelong friend Cao Zhen deeply grief-stricken, prompting the Grand Marshal to voluntarily reduce his own land grants and fief revenues to provide for the support of Zhu Zan’s fatherless children. Though he served in the high command of Cao Wei’s western armies, his life was cut short by illness or combat fatigue during the harsh frontier campaigns.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapters 93 and 94 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhu Zan’s role is dramatically adapted into a tragic archetype of the overly zealous vanguard officer. When Zhuge Liang launches his First Northern Expedition, Cao Zhen is appointed as the Great Commander to defend the western border. Trusting in their lifelong bond and martial valor, Cao Zhen appoints Zhu Zan and Cao Zun as the forward vanguard commanders. During the campaign at Jian’ge, Zhuge Liang employs a brilliant psychological ruse, ordering Shu Han forces to feign defeat, abandoning supplies and armor in their wake to lure the Wei forces into a trap. Driven by a reckless desire for glory and military merit, Zhu Zan ignores the cautious counsel of his staff and impetuously leads his vanguard deep into a narrow, treacherous mountain valley.
As the Wei forces become trapped within the canyon, Zhuge Liang triggers the ambush: Shu Han troops roll down massive boulders, rain down fire arrows, and block the exits. In the ensuing panic, the legendary Shu Han champion Zhao Yun charges from the mountain pass, his spear dancing in a lethal display of martial prowess. Zhu Zan, caught in the confusion and unable to form a defensive line, is confronted by Zhao Yun. In a swift, single exchange of blows, Zhao Yun strikes Zhu Zan with a devastating lance thrust, slaying him on the spot and causing him to topple from his horse, ending his life and his vanguard’s resistance. His comrade-in-arms Cao Zun is shortly thereafter slain by Wei Yan in the same ambush.
Famous Quotes & Historical Sayings
In Chapter 93 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, despite the ominous signs of a trap, Zhu Zan urged his men forward in his hubris: ‘The enemy is in total rout and has abandoned their grain carts! This is a heaven-sent opportunity to achieve immortal glory. Let us push forward with all speed—whoever hesitates shall be executed on the spot!’

Chapter 93
- Zhu Zan (朱赞, Chu Tán): Zhu Zan is appointed by Cao Zhen as deputy vanguard during Wei’s campaign against Zhuge Liang. He accompanies Cao Zhen’s army toward Qishan. Zhuge Liang deliberately creates the appearance that the Shu army is withdrawing, causing Cao Zhen’s officers to pursue. Zhu Zan and Cao Zun enter an apparently abandoned Shu camp and are caught in the ambush. They escape the immediate trap with a small group of cavalry, but Zhao Yun blocks their retreat. Zhu Zan is caught off guard and Zhao Yun kills him with a spear. His death leaves Cao Zhen without both of his vanguard commanders.
