The Life and Lineage of Zhou Yong

Zhou Yong (周邕) was an aristocratic noble from the state of Eastern Wu during the tumultuous Three Kingdoms period of ancient China. He was the son of Zhou Fang, a celebrated Wu strategist and military administrator famed for orchestrating the decisive deception of Wei general Cao Xiu at the Battle of Shiting in 228 AD.

Although official dynastic records such as Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi) provide scarce biographical details regarding his individual political career, his lineage placed him among the influential regional gentry of Jiangdong. The noble reputation established through his father’s dedicated service under Sun Quan granted his household substantial standing across the Poyang region and the broader southern court.

Historical Standing in Eastern Wu Society

During the Three Kingdoms era, family background and clan networks played a vital role in determining a noble’s standing within Eastern Wu. While historical texts do not record specific ministerial appointments or battlefield campaigns under his own name, figures like Zhou Yong represented the continuing generational line of loyal military commanders who consolidated Sun Quan’s southern empire. His family’s status reflected the crucial alliance between local Jiangdong elites and the imperial throne.

Absence in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, notable focus is given to Zhou Fang’s dramatic sacrifice—cutting his own hair to convince Cao Xiu of his fake defection. However, because the historical novel condenses wide genealogies to emphasise pivotal military showdowns, Zhou Yong is entirely absent from the fictional dramatisation.

Key Relationships and Clan Heritage
