Biography & Historical Record of Pang Xi
Pang Xi was an influential elder statesman, senior military general, and founding political pillar of Yi Province during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Luoyang, he was a close personal associate of Liu Yan, the founding Governor of Yi Province. Renowned across the riverlands for his martial resolve and seasoned administrative command, he served in supreme regional posts including Grand Administrator of Baxi, Area Commander of the Northern Marches, and later Left General and Director of Retainers under Liu Bei. Documented in Chen Shou’s official historical work, the Records of the Three Kingdoms, he safeguarded the northern frontier of Sichuan against Zhang Lu for over a decade.
In 194 AD, when Liu Yan’s elder sons were executed in Chang’an following a failed plot against Li Jue, the veteran official displayed extraordinary courage. Stationed in the capital, he covertly gathered Liu Yan’s surviving orphaned grandsons, smuggled them across the rugged Qinling mountain ranges, and delivered them safely to Chengdu. In gratitude, Liu Yan treated him with profound intimacy and honor. Following Liu Yan’s death, he supported Liu Zhang’s succession as Governor of Yi Province. To solidify their political bond, Liu Zhang married his eldest son, Liu Xun, to the commander’s daughter.
As Grand Administrator of Baxi stationed at Langzhong, he recruited indigenous Cong tribal warriors into elite shock infantry to resist Zhang Lu’s Five Pecks of Rice army. When conflict erupted between Liu Bei and Liu Zhang in 212 AD, he held Baxi until Liu Zhang surrendered Chengdu in 214 AD. Submitting peacefully to Liu Bei, he was appointed Left General and later Director of Retainers, serving honorably until his death in office.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel, Pang Xi appears in key chapters as a venerable frontier commander. His urgent military dispatches regarding Zhang Lu’s aggression serve as the primary catalyst for Liu Zhang to invite Liu Bei into Sichuan. Following Liu Bei’s capture of the region, Pang Xi joined senior leaders in presenting the historic imperial memorial crowning Liu Bei as King of Hanzhong in 219 AD.
