Biography & Historical Record
Dong Huang (董璜, died 192 AD) was an official and military officer during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the son of Dong Zhuo’s deceased elder brother and served as one of the chief military figures within the Dong clan’s inner circle during Dong Zhuo’s tyrannical dominance over the imperial court.
Following Dong Zhuo’s rise to absolute power in Luoyang in 189 AD, nepotism elevated Dong clan members to high imperial offices regardless of merit. Dong Huang was appointed as a Palace Attendant (侍中, Shizhong) and General of the Household (中郎將, Zhonglangjiang). He was entrusted with the direct command of imperial palace troops and bodyguards, acting as Dong Zhuo’s eyes and ears inside the inner court.
When Dong Zhuo relocated the capital to Chang’an and built the fortress of Meiwu (郿塢) in 190–191 AD, Dong Huang was assigned major responsibilities over the clan’s private military assets and treasury. Along with his uncle Dong Min, he enjoyed supreme privilege and authority, wielding power arbitrarily across the capital.
In the fourth lunar month of 192 AD, Wang Yun, Lu Bu, and Shisun Rui orchestrated Dong Zhuo’s assassination at the palace gates in Chang’an. Immediately following Dong Zhuo’s demise, imperial troops led by Huangfu Song and Lu Bu laid siege to the fortress of Meiwu. Dong Huang and the remaining Dong clan members were captured and executed, and their heads were publicly displayed, completely extinguishing Dong Zhuo’s lineage.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dong Huang appears as a loyal confidant and henchman to his uncle Dong Zhuo. He is depicted as holding substantial military command over the Meiwu garrison.
“Dong Zhuo appointed his younger brother Dong Min as General of the Left and Marquis of Hu, and his nephew Dong Huang as Palace Attendant and General of the Household, placing them in command of the private army and treasuries at Meiwu.”
— Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 9
Following Dong Zhuo’s assassination, Dong Huang attempted to defend Meiwu Fortress against the advancing imperial forces commanded by Huangfu Song. However, the garrison crumbled under internal revolt and the assault of imperial forces. Dong Huang was captured and summarily beheaded alongside the entire Dong household.
