Biography & Historical Record
Su Qin (苏秦, Tô Tần) was a renowned politician and strategist during the Warring States period of China. He is best known for being the primary architect of the ‘Vertical Alliance’ (Hợp tung), a diplomatic coalition of six states—Yan (燕, Yên), Zhao (赵, Triệu), Han (韩, Hàn), Wei (魏, Ngụy), Qi (齐, Tề), and Chu (楚, Sở)—aimed at countering the rising hegemony of the State of Qin (秦, Tần). Having studied under the master strategist Guiguzi (鬼谷子, Quỷ Cốc Tử) alongside Zhang Yi (张仪, Trương Nghi), Su Qin mastered the art of rhetoric and statecraft. He famously endured years of poverty and academic ridicule, reportedly stabbing his own thigh with an awl to stay awake during late-night studies, eventually rising to become the Prime Minister of six states simultaneously. His diplomatic genius laid the foundation for decades of peace for the eastern states, preventing Qin from expanding for fifteen years.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Su Qin lived centuries before the Three Kingdoms era, his name and deeds are frequently cited by strategists like Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) and Su Dai (苏代, Tô Đại) as the ultimate benchmark for diplomatic persuasion and the art of alliances. His ‘Vertical Alliance’ is the conceptual antithesis to the ‘Horizontal Alliance’ (Liên hoành) of Zhang Yi (张仪, Trương Nghi), a dichotomy frequently discussed by advisors evaluating the alliance between Shu (蜀, Thục) and Wu (吴, Ngô).
