Biography & Historical Record
Han Wu (韩武, Hàn Vũ), posthumously known as Prince Xuanhui of Han (韩宣惠王), was a ruler of the State of Han during the Warring States period of ancient China. Reigning from 332 BC until his death in 312 BC, he presided over the Han state during a time of intense geopolitical maneuvering between the Seven Warring States. As the ruler of a central state, his reign was marked by the constant pressure exerted by the rising power of the State of Qin (秦国, Tần Quốc). Han Wu is remembered for attempting to consolidate Han’s position through diplomatic marriages and shifting alliances. His reign saw the continued erosion of Han’s territory due to the expansionist policies of Qin, led by prominent figures such as Zhang Yi (张仪, Trương Nghi). Despite his efforts to maintain sovereignty, his era was characterized by the transition of Han from a middle-tier power to one increasingly vulnerable to its neighbors. His historical legacy is tied to his role as a precursor to the final collapse of the state, as his successors struggled to maintain stability against the relentless military campaigns of the Qin forces.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While the Romance of the Three Kingdoms focuses on the later Han Dynasty, the historical chronicles associated with the Warring States period, such as the Records of the Grand Historian, provide the primary literary source for the life of Prince Xuanhui. He does not appear as a character in the narrative of Luo Guanzhong, as his life predates the Three Kingdoms era by several centuries.
