Biography & Historical Record
Yang Zhi is a descendant of the famous Northern Song general Yang Ye (杨业, Dương Nghiệp). Despite his noble lineage, his life was marked by misfortune and systemic corruption within the Imperial Court. Known for a distinct blue birthmark on his face, he was a skilled warrior and a former officer of the Imperial Guards. His tragic arc highlights the corruption of the Northern Song bureaucracy, as he failed repeatedly to regain his military status due to a lack of bribes and bad luck, eventually forcing him to seek refuge among the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
“The blue-faced beast roaming the world, a blade of steel that knows no master.”
Yang Zhi is best known for the failed mission to deliver the ‘Birthday Gift’ (a massive treasure hoard) to Minister Cai Jing (蔡京, Thái Kinh). Despite his meticulous planning, the shipment was intercepted by Chao Gai (晁盖, Tiều Cái) and his band of outlaws. This defeat shattered his career. He is also famous for his duel with Zhou Tong (周通, Chu Thông) and his legendary fight against Lu Zhishen (鲁智深, Lỗ Trí Thâm) at Daxiangguo Temple. He later joined the Liangshan outlaws after a period as a bandit leader at Erlong Mountain. As one of the ‘Heavenly Spirits’, he served as a key field commander during the campaigns against the Liao Kingdom and the rebellion of Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp).
