Biography & Historical Record
Xu Ning was a renowned martial artist and a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Guard of the Northern Song Dynasty. Known as the ‘Golden Spear Handler’, he was celebrated for his unparalleled mastery of the spear and his refined technique with the hook-lance. He lived a life of relative comfort as a teacher of martial arts for the imperial troops until he was targeted by the strategists of Liangshan Marsh.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
His spear dance was like a dragon coiling in the clouds, and his armor shimmered like the morning sun on jade.
Xu Ning was coerced into joining the outlaw band of Liangshan after Shi Qian (时迁, Thời Thiên) stole his family’s priceless ancestral armor, the ‘Yanling Coil Gold Armor’. To retrieve it, Xu Ning followed the thief to Liangshan, where he was welcomed with great respect by Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) and Wu Yong (吴用, Ngô Dụng). Once he realized the caliber of the men at the marsh, he defected from the Song government and became the 18th chieftain, serving as a cavalry commander. He played a pivotal role in training the Liangshan troops in specialized anti-cavalry techniques. During the final campaign against the rebel leader Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp), Xu Ning fought valiantly but was struck by a poisoned arrow during a night raid near Hangzhou and died shortly thereafter.
