Jin Dajian (金大坚, Kim Đại Kiên) is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. He is known as the ‘Jade Armed Craftsman’ (玉臂匠) for his unparalleled skill in engraving seals and reproducing calligraphy. Before joining the outlaws of Liangshan, he resided in Jizhou, where his reputation for carving seals that were indistinguishable from genuine imperial edicts or master calligrapher signatures made him highly sought after. He is the 66th of the 108 Stars of Destiny, associated with the Earth-Skill Star (地巧星).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
His hands could carve the soul of stone, turning simple jade into the voice of kings; he was the master of the silent script, the architect of the outlaw’s legitimacy.
Jin Dajian’s primary contribution to the Liangshan cause was his ability to forge official documents. When Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) was trapped by the treacherous schemes of Cai Jing (蔡京, Thái Kinh), it was Jin Dajian who was recruited by Dai Zong (戴宗, Đới Tông) and Wu Yong (吴用, Ngô Dụng) to forge a letter from the Prime Minister to deceive the authorities in Jiangzhou. His craftsmanship allowed the Liangshan heroes to manipulate bureaucratic orders, significantly aiding in the rescue missions and logistical maneuvers of the rebellion. After the amnesty, he served the Song court and remained a master craftsman until his end.
