Biography & Historical Record
Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) is the central protagonist of the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally a low-level clerk in Yuncheng County, he was known for his benevolence, filial piety, and his willingness to assist those in need, earning him the moniker ‘Timely Rain.’ Despite his initial loyalty to the Song Dynasty, a series of misfortunes—including the murder of his mistress Yan Poxi (閻婆惜, Diêm Bà Tích) and a false accusation—forced him to live as an outlaw. He eventually rose to become the leader of the 108 outlaws at Mount Liang.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Song Jiang does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as his story is set in the Northern Song Dynasty, he is often viewed through the lens of traditional heroism akin to figures like Liu Bei (劉備, Lưu Bị). His leadership style, centered on the Confucian virtue of loyalty and justice (Yi), mirrors the legendary camaraderie of the Peach Garden.
