Biography & Historical Record
Du Xing, known by his nickname “Ghost-faced Monster” (Guijian’er), is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally a merchant from Puzhou, he traveled to the south and gained a reputation for his martial prowess and sharp intellect. During his time in the south, he rescued Li Ying (李應, Lý Ứng), the master of the Li Family Manor, when Li Ying was in legal trouble, cementing a lifelong bond of loyalty between them. Du Xing eventually became the steward of the Li Family Manor, managing its affairs with great efficiency.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Du Xing is a character of the Northern Song era in Water Margin, his archetype as a loyal retainer and skilled advisor mirrors the structure of auxiliary officers found in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He represents the secondary but essential tier of Liangshan heroes who prioritize personal loyalty and organizational management over individual martial glory.
