Shi Qian (时迁, Thời Thiên), known by his nickname ‘The Flea on a Drum’ (Gu Shang Zao), is one of the 108 Stars of Destiny in the classic Chinese literary masterpiece Water Margin. He ranks 107th among the 108 heroes, positioned as the Earth Thief Star (Dìzéi Xīng). Originally a petty thief and acrobat, Shi Qian is renowned for his extraordinary lightness, stealth, and ability to scale walls or infiltrate heavily guarded compounds without detection. While he is often looked down upon by some of the more ‘noble’ heroes of Liangshan due to his background as a common burglar, his skills proved indispensable to the Liangshan cause on numerous occasions.
Shi Qian is famous for his vital role in intelligence gathering and sabotage. His most iconic feat involves his infiltration of the Zhu Family Manor and the city of Daming, where he played a pivotal role in the success of military operations. Unlike the brawlers of the bandit gang, Shi Qian functioned as a specialized infiltrator and scout.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Shi Qian is a character from the Northern Song period-set novel Water Margin and does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which depicts events from the late Han and Three Kingdoms era. However, his archetype of the ‘skilled scout’ is often compared to figures like Shi A (史阿, Sử A) or other clandestine operatives in the Three Kingdoms literature.

Shi Qian meets Yang Xiong (杨雄, Dương Hùng) and Shi Xiu (石秀, Thạch Tú) and joins them after helping them resolve a crisis in Jizhou.

Shi Qian is captured by the Zhu family after attempting to steal a cock, which serves as the spark that ignites the conflict between Liangshan Marsh and the Zhu Family Manor.

Final Campaign
After surviving the brutal war against the southern rebel Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp), Shi Qian falls ill and passes away, ending his tenure with the Liangshan heroes.
