Biography & Historical Record
Wei Zhongdao (Vệ Trọng Đạo, 卫仲道; c. 165–c. 190 AD) was an accomplished scholar of the illustrious Wei clan of Hedong during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was celebrated in his youth for his profound erudition, poetic sensibility, and gentle temperament.
Because of his outstanding reputation, he was wedded to the foremost prodigy of the era, the famed poetess and calligrapher Cai Yan (Cai Wenji / 蔡琰), daughter of Grand Master Cai Yong (蔡邕). Their union was praised across the capital as a perfect match of mutual literary talent and refinement.
Tragically, Wei Zhongdao was of frail health and fell critically ill with pulmonary consumption shortly after their marriage. He passed away prematurely without leaving heirs. Facing ill-tempered treatment from Wei’s grieving relatives who blamed her for the misfortune, Cai Yan chose to return to her father’s household in Luoyang just as the fires of Dong Zhuo’s insurrection consumed the capital.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 71: When Cao Cao learned that Cai Yong’s daughter had been taken captive into the northern sands, he remembered her early tragic bereavement following the death of her first husband Wei Zhongdao and immediately dispatched gold to secure her return.
