Mu Guiying (穆桂英, Mộc Quế Anh), is China’s most celebrated legendary female warrior and supreme commander in the beloved folk cycle Generals of the Yang Family (杨家将, Yang Jia Jiang). Originally the spirited chieftain daughter of Mu Village Fortress (Muke Zhai 穆柯寨), she was peerless in swordsmanship, cavalry warfare, and Daoist mystical battle formations.
When the northern Liao army deployed the terrifying, labyrinthine 72 Heavenly Gate Formations (天门阵) that paralyzed the Song army, the Yang clan needed the magical Dragon-Subduing Wood (降龙木) possessed by the Mu fortress. Young commander Yang Zongbao rode to demand it, but Mu Guiying easily captured him in single combat, captivated by his valor, and chose him as her husband. Joining the Yang family, she submitted to her venerable mother-in-law She Saihua (She Saihua) and was entrusted by Emperor Zhenzong with the supreme Marshal’s Seal.
Riding into battle at the head of the Song armies, Marshal Mu Guiying penetrated the Heavenly Gate Formations, slaying the Liao grand commanders and shattering the barbarian invasion. Decades later, at the age of fifty-three after her husband’s death, when the Western Xia invaded, Mu Guiying led the celebrated ‘Twelve Female Generals of the Yang Family’ on the Great Western Expedition, scaling precipitous cliffs to decisively crush the Western Xia kingdom, cementing her legacy as the eternal symbol of patriotic female heroism.
