Pan Jinlian (潘金莲, Phan Kim Liên), is one of the most famous and culturally infamous figures in classical Chinese literature, taking central stage in the Ming epic Water Margin (水浒传, Shuihu Zhuan) and serving as the titular heroine of the landmark novel The Golden Lotus (金瓶梅, Jin Ping Mei). Originally a maidservant in the household of a wealthy master in Qinghe County, she was bestowed in marriage to the impoverished, diminutive baker Wu Dalang (武大郎) as an act of petty spite after she rejected the master’s advances.
Living in Yanggu County, Pan Jinlian despised Wu Dalang’s homely appearance and modest trade hawking steamed flatbreads (炊饼). When Wu Dalang’s imposing younger brother Wu Song (武松) arrived after famously slaying the man-eating tiger at Jingyang Ridge, Pan Jinlian attempted to seduce her brother-in-law over hot wine by the hearth, only to be sternly and violently rebuked by Wu Song. Soon afterward, while lowering her window lattice bamboo rod, she accidentally dropped it onto the head of the passing wealthy libertine and apothecary merchant Ximen Qing (西门庆). Captivated by her dazzling beauty, Ximen Qing enlisted the cunning neighboring teahouse proprietress Mother Wang (王婆) to orchestrate an adulterous trap in the teahouse.
When young pear-seller Brother Yun (郓哥) alerted Wu Dalang to the betrayal, the baker stormed the teahouse to catch the lovers, only to be kicked unconscious by Ximen Qing. Bedridden and helpless while Wu Song was away on official duty, Wu Dalang was coerced by Pan Jinlian and Mother Wang into drinking a bowl of lethal arsenic-laced medicine, and smothered beneath a quilt as the poison took effect. However, their crime was uncovered through Coroner He Jiu’s preserved blackened bone fragments. When Wu Song returned to Yanggu, he convened a neighborhood tribunal before Wu Dalang’s spirit tablet, forced Pan Jinlian to confess, and executed her in a blood sacrifice, before hunting down and decapitating Ximen Qing at the Lion Pavilion.
