Li Qian (李乾, Lý Càn; courtesy name Boyang; d. 194), native of Chengshi in Jiyin Commandery, was a stalwart military magnate and martyr for Cao Cao during the warlord clashes of the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the father of celebrated Wei general Li Dian (李典).
Possessing immense personal courage and charismatic authority, Li Qian commanded a private clan army of several thousand armed retainers at Chengshi. When Cao Cao raised forces to attack Dong Zhuo and pacify Yan Province, Li Qian pledged his entire lineage and retainers to Cao Cao’s banner, serving with valor during the pacification of Shouzhang and the Yellow Turban rebels.
In 194, while Cao Cao was campaigning against Tao Qian in Xu Province, Zhang Miao and Chen Gong rebelled, welcoming Lu Bu to seize Yan Province. Lu Bu’s rebel generals Xue Lan and Li Feng seized Juye and pressured Li Qian to switch allegiance. Li Qian resolutely spat at them, refusing to betray Cao Cao, and was murdered in cold blood. His death ignited an unquenchable thirst for vengeance in his nephew Li Zheng and son Li Dian, who launched a ferocious assault alongside Cao Cao, annihilating Xue Lan’s army and decapitating his killers.
