Lady Jiang (姜氏 / 姜叙之母, Khương thị / Khương mẫu; d. 213), native of Tianshui, was an illustrious heroine of the Three Kingdoms era and the mother of Wei general Jiang Xu (姜叙). Her fearless righteousness during Ma Chao’s rebellion in Liang Province earned her immortal praise in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi).
When warlord Ma Chao captured Jicheng and murdered Regional Inspector Wei Kang, Jiang Xu and loyalist comrades Yang Fu (杨阜) and Zhao Ang (赵昂) plotted to rise against Ma Chao. However, Jiang Xu hesitated out of profound filial anxiety, fearing that Ma Chao would execute his aging mother residing in Licheng. Learning of his hesitation, Lady Jiang sternly confronted her son: ‘To avenge one’s rightful governor and uphold loyalty to the state is supreme righteousness! For eighty years I have lived; what matters the death of an old woman? If you waver on my account, you will shame our ancestral name!’
Galvanized by his mother’s heroic courage, Jiang Xu launched the uprising, recaptured Jicheng, and drove Ma Chao into Liang Province’s wilderness. When Ma Chao counter-attacked Licheng by surprise, he captured Lady Jiang. Undaunted by blades, she pointed at Ma Chao’s face and cursed him: ‘You traitorous rogue who betrayed your own father and slaughtered your lord! Heaven will not let you live!’ Enraged, Ma Chao murdered her on the spot. Cao Cao later honored her with profound grief, granting her noble posthumous imperial honors.
