Biography & Historical Record
Feng Xi (died 222 AD), was a military officer and general who served under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. Born in Jing Province, Feng Xi rose through the military ranks due to his tactical acumen and combat bravery. He became one of Liu Bei’s trusted frontline commanders, participating in major campaigns including the defense and expansion of Shu territories.
When Liu Bei launched his massive retaliatory military campaign against Eastern Wu to avenge the loss of Jing Province and the execution of Guan Yu, Feng Xi served as a senior vanguard general alongside Wu Ban. During the initial stages of the Battle of Yiling in 222 AD, Feng Xi achieved notable successes by defeating Wu advance forces. However, when the Shu army established extended encampments along the forests and valleys, Lu Xun executed a devastating counterattack using fire tactics. Feng Xi was ambushed and killed in action during the rout, marking a major tragedy for the Shu Han military forces.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Feng Xi is portrayed as a seasoned and daring vanguard general of Shu Han. First featuring prominently during the campaign of Yiling in Chapter 81 and Chapter 83, Feng Xi is appointed alongside Wu Ban as a vanguard leader for Liu Bei’s grand expedition against Eastern Wu. He leads successful assaults against Wu outposts and defeats enemy commanders like Sun Huan in early skirmishes.
However, his fate turns disastrous in Chapter 84 as Lu Xun implements a massive fire attack against the interconnected Shu camps. Trapped by raging flames and heavy enemy encirclement, Feng Xi attempts to fight his way out but is cut down in battle by Wu general Pan Zhang, symbolizing the catastrophic collapse of the Shu expedition.
