Xiahou Lingnu was a noblewoman of the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. She was the daughter of Xiahou Wengai, belonging to the prominent Xiahou clan of Qiao Commandery. She was married to Cao Shuang’s cousin, Cao Wenshu.
Xiahou Lingnu is celebrated in Chinese historical literature as an extraordinary exemplar of marital fidelity, moral fortitude, and unyielding virtue. Following the early death of her husband Cao Wenshu, she had no children. Fearing that her father Xiahou Wengai would force her to remarry—as was common practice—Xiahou Lingnu expressed her refusal by cutting off her own ears. Later, after Sima Yi’s coup d’état at the Gaoping Tombs in 249 AD resulted in the total extermination of Cao Shuang’s clan and allies, Cao Wenshu’s family was completely wiped out. Her father Xiahou Wengai severed ties with the doomed Cao family and arranged a new marriage for her. To demonstrate her absolute loyalty to her deceased husband and his fallen lineage, Xiahou Lingnu took a knife and sliced off her own nose, declaring that her virtue and marital oath would never be compromised by political convenience or fear of death.
When Grand Tutor Sima Yi heard of her supreme devotion and self-mutilation to preserve her honor, he praised her heroism, granted her a special pardon, allowed her to adopt a son to carry on Cao Wenshu’s lineage, and protected her family estate.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou Lingnu’s heroic story is recounted in Chapter 107 following the downfall of Cao Shuang. After Sima Yi’s purge destroys Cao Shuang’s entire clan, Xiahou Lingnu’s father attempts to force her into remarrying to distance their family from the disgraced Cao lineage. Refusing to betray her deceased husband Cao Wenshu, Xiahou Lingnu cuts off her ears and nose in self-mutilation to reject all marriage suitors. Moved to tears by her uncompromising loyalty and virtue, Sima Yi praises her as a heroine of unmatched fidelity and officially restores her husband’s family inheritance so she may adopt an heir to carry on the family name.
