Biography & Historical Record
Di Tribe Chieftain (狄族酋长, Địch tộc tù trưởng) was a formidable tribal sovereign, warrior commander, and elder of the Xingguo Di confederation (兴国氐/狄) in the rugged frontier regions of Liangzhou during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Alongside prominent Di leaders such as Qian Wan (千万, Kiềm Vạn, King of the Xingguo Di) and A Gui (King of the Yinping Di), he commanded thousands of fierce mountain auxiliary cavalry and infantries.
When Ma Chao (马超, Mã Siêu) and Han Sui rallied the western forces against Cao Cao following the Battle of Tong Pass in 211 AD, the Di Tribe Chieftain forged a staunch military pact with Ma Chao to defend their tribal autonomy. In 214 AD, Cao Cao’s supreme western commander Xiahou Yuan led a punitive expedition into Liangzhou, laying siege to the rocky mountain citadels of Xingguo. The Di chieftains mounted a tenacious resistance; though their fortress ultimately fell, the chieftain facilitated Qian Wan’s strategic retreat into the mountains of Hanzhong and Yizhou to unite with Liu Bei, leaving a legacy of valiant defiance against central imperial subjugation.
