Biography & Historical Record
Ding Chong (丁冲, Đinh Xung), courtesy name Youyang (幼阳), was a prominent statesman, strategist, and close personal confidant of Cao Cao during the formative years of the Three Kingdoms era. Originating from Qiao County in Pei Commandery, he was a fellow townsman and long-standing friend of Cao Cao from their youth.
During the chaos following the death of Dong Zhuo, when Emperor Xian was fleeing the mutinous warlords Li Jue and Guo Si, Ding Chong served as Sima of the Western Expedition (西征司马). Recognizing the supreme strategic opportunity, Ding Chong sent secret urgent memorials to Cao Cao, persuasively urging him to escort the Son of Heaven to the eastern commanderies. This critical counsel formed the bedrock of Cao Cao’s famous grand strategy to “command the nobles in the name of the Emperor.”
Cao Cao held Ding Chong in immense personal affection, dining with him as an intimate peer and appointing him to high secretarial posts. Ding Chong was the father of Ding Yi (丁仪) and Ding He (丁廙), who later became the most ardent and brilliant literary advocates of Prince Cao Zhi.
