Biography & Historical Record
Fan Rui (樊瑞, Phàn Thụy) is a fictional character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally a Taoist priest and leader of the bandits at Mangdang Mountain (芒砀山), he was known for his mastery of sorcery and the use of a deadly meteor hammer. Unlike many other outlaws who were forced into rebellion by corrupt officials, Fan Rui initially sought to conquer Liangshan Marsh to expand his own influence. However, after being defeated by Gongsun Sheng (公孙胜, Công Tôn Thắng) in a display of Taoist magic, he pledged his loyalty to the Liangshan cause, becoming the 61st member of the 108 Stars of Destiny, ranking under the Earth Demon Star.
Role in Water Margin
“With my meteor hammer, no enemy can stand before me; with my Taoist arts, the heavens themselves shall yield.” — Fan Rui, reflecting on his role as the Demon King of Chaos.
Fan Rui’s arrival at Liangshan serves as a pivotal moment that highlights the supernatural elements of the narrative. His challenge to the Liangshan heroes demonstrated his arrogance but also his formidable potential. Following his defeat, he acted as a strategic asset, often coordinating with Gongsun Sheng to counter enemy sorcerers during the various imperial campaigns. His title, ‘Demon King of Chaos’, reflects both his rebellious origins and his destructive effectiveness on the battlefield.
