The Legend of Gongsun Sheng
Gongsun Sheng, nicknamed the “Dragon in the Clouds,” is a celebrated hero from the classic literary epic Water Margin. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Northern Song Dynasty, he ranks fourth among the 108 Liangshan heroes. Unlike many outlaws driven to rebellion by imperial persecution or crime, this Taoist priest joined the brotherhood out of celestial destiny and a pursuit of righteous justice.
Spiritual Master of Liangshan
Trained by the immortal master Luo Zhenren on Mount Erxian, the mystic adept mastered ancient esoteric arts, including the ability to summon winds and control divine thunder. Alongside chief strategist Wu Yong, he served as Liangshan’s metaphysical protector. Whenever the outlaws faced supernatural adversaries—most notably during the fierce siege of Gaotangzhou—his mystic spells dispersed hostile illusions and secured vital victories.
“I have come to present a great fortune to the Ward Chief. This wealth is not from heaven or earth, but seized from the corrupt to serve the righteous.”
As the military campaigns progressed, Gongsun Sheng deployed his Taoist magic to defend his comrades across numerous battlefields. However, his true wisdom lay in understanding when to step back from worldly ambition. Foreshadowing the tragic fate awaiting the marshland outlaws under imperial amnesty, he respectfully resigned before the deadly campaign against Fang La.
