Guan Sheng, known by his nickname ‘Great Blade’, is a major character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He is introduced as a military officer serving the Northern Song Dynasty in Pudong. As a direct descendant of the legendary general Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) of the Three Kingdoms era, he bears a striking physical resemblance to his ancestor, possessing a similar face and wielding a massive Blue Dragon Crescent Blade. He is considered one of the Five Tiger Generals of Liangshan and is widely respected for his martial prowess, tactical intellect, and sense of honor.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While he does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the narrative of Water Margin emphasizes his role as the embodiment of Guan Yu’s spirit. His presence in the Liangshan assembly signifies the transition of martial honor from the Three Kingdoms era into the Song Dynasty. His primary rivalry involves facing the Liangshan heroes, only to be eventually persuaded to join them after being captured by the strategy of Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) and Wu Yong (吴用, Ngô Dụng).
