Hu Sanniang: Biography and Origins
Hu Sanniang is celebrated as one of the three heroic female outlaws of the Liangshan Marsh in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Nicknamed “Ten-Foot Green” (Yizhang Qing) due to her exceptional height, beauty, and prowess, she represents the pinnacle of female martial archetypes set during the Northern Song Dynasty.
Born as the daughter of Squire Hu of Hujia Manor, she was an elite warrior proficient with dual sabers and throwing lassos. When Liangshan forces besieged the neighboring Zhu Family Manor, she rode out in defense, capturing multiple bandit chieftains before being overpowered and captured by Lin Chong. Following the tragic destruction of her family estate, Song Jiang persuaded her to join the Liangshan brotherhood, eventually arranging her marriage to the dwarf outlaw Wang Ying. Despite her turbulent transition from noble heiress to rebel commander, she served honorably as a top cavalry leader.
