Historical Career
Hu Zhen was an influential man from Liang Province. By 191 he held the post of Administrator of Chen Commandery and was given a high military command under Dong Zhuo, with Lü Bu and junior officers (including Hua Xiong) placed under him. In the spring of 191 Dong Zhuo ordered him to march with 5,000 men to Yangren to block Sun Jian’s advance from the south. Hu Zhen and Lü Bu were already on bad terms. During the march Hu Zhen’s impatience and threats to “behead a high-ranking officer to restore unity” only deepened the mutual hatred. At Guangcheng the exhausted army halted; Lü Bu then raised a false alarm that the enemy had sortied, causing a complete panic in which men abandoned armour and saddles. Although the force regrouped by dawn, Sun Jian had strengthened his defences. When Sun Jian later attacked, Hu Zhen’s army was routed and Hua Xiong was killed. Hu Zhen retreated in humiliation.
After Dong Zhuo’s assassination in 192, Hu Zhen briefly served the new regime under Wang Yun, but was alienated by Wang Yun’s arrogance. When Li Jue and Guo Si rose in revolt, Wang Yun sent Hu Zhen, Yang Ding and Xu Rong against them. After Xu Rong fell in battle, Hu Zhen and Yang Ding defected to the rebels. Once Li Jue and Guo Si occupied Chang’an, Hu Zhen was appointed Colonel-Director of Retainers. In that office he used his authority to have a personal enemy, the local officer You Yin, falsely condemned and executed. A few months later Hu Zhen fell ill, declared that You Yin’s vengeful spirit had come for him, and died.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms Portrayal
In the novel Hu Zhen is stationed at the fictional Sishui Pass (Si Shui Gate) as a subordinate of Hua Xiong during the early stages of the Anti-Dong Zhuo coalition campaign. When Sun Jian’s forces attack the pass, Hu Zhen is slain by Sun Jian’s general Cheng Pu. The novel therefore advances his death by roughly a year and places it on the battlefield rather than attributing it to illness and supernatural guilt after the fall of Chang’an.

Historical Note
Historically Hu Zhen’s career is a study in personal antagonism and political survival: his feud with Lü Bu contributed directly to the disaster at Yangren, his later defection helped Li Jue and Guo Si seize Chang’an, and his abuse of the Colonel-Director’s office to kill a private enemy was followed by a death he himself ascribed to supernatural retribution. The novel simplifies the record by making him a subordinate of Hua Xiong who dies early at Sishui Pass at the hands of Cheng Pu, thereby removing him from the later Chang’an intrigues and giving Sun Jian’s army an early named kill.
