He was described as possessing a unique appearance with emerald eyes and a yellowish beard, reflecting diverse regional lineages during the Northern Song Dynasty. Within the Liangshan brotherhood, he holds the 57th seat among the 108 stars and ranks 21st among the 72 Earthly Fiends, carrying the celestial title of the ‘Earth Beast Star’ (地獸星).
Literary Role and Military Contributions
Unlike many frontline warriors who earned fame through combat prowess, this specialist gained renown for his irreplaceable technical skills. Recruited into the stronghold after being recommended by Zhang Qing, Huangfu Duan brought invaluable veterinary mastery to the Liangshan cavalry. His ability to diagnose and cure virtually any equine ailment ensured that the outlaw army’s mounts remained in peak physical condition during intense campaigns.
When the imperial Song court granted amnesty, Huangfu Duan accompanied the Liangshan forces during expeditions against rival factions, including the Liao state and the southern insurgent Fang La. Recognizing the strategic necessity of his skills, the emperor retained him in the imperial capital to manage the royal stables, granting him a peaceful and prosperous official career.
