Biography & Historical Record
Huo Qubing (霍去病, Hoắc Khứ Bệnh) was a legendary military commander and general of the Western Han Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Wu of Han (汉武帝, Hán Vũ Đế). He is renowned for his brilliant tactical maneuvers and his rapid, aggressive cavalry campaigns against the Xiongnu (匈奴, Hung Nô) confederation. Born as an illegitimate son, his life path changed drastically when his aunt, Wei Zifu (卫子夫, Vệ Tử Phu), became the empress. Rising quickly through the ranks, Huo Qubing became famous for his ‘light cavalry’ warfare, penetrating deep into enemy territory and winning decisive victories, most notably during the Battle of Mobei (漠北之战, Trận Mạc Bắc). He died at the young age of 24, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest military geniuses in Chinese history. His most famous quote, reflecting his commitment to duty, is: ‘As long as the Xiongnu are not destroyed, why should I bother building a home?’ (匈奴未灭,何以家为?).
