Biography & Historical Record
Lady Xue (薛氏, Tiết thị) was a noblewoman of the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the first wife of scholar-patriarch Wang Rong (王融, Vương Dung) of the prominent Langya Wang clan. Renowned for her gentle disposition, classical virtue, and noble lineage, she was the biological mother of Wang Xiang (王祥, Vương Tường — celebrated as one of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars and later Grand Tutor of the Western Jin Dynasty).
Tragically, Lady Xue succumbed to premature illness while Wang Xiang was still a young boy. Her early passing profoundly shaped the life of Wang Xiang, who was subsequently raised under his stepmother Lady Zhu (朱氏). Despite enduring severe domestic trials after her death, Wang Xiang held the sacred memory of his birth mother in everlasting reverence, exemplifying pure filial devotion that moved heaven and earth.
Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles
“Wang Xiang lost his birth mother Lady Xue in early childhood. When his stepmother mistreated him, Xiang never harbored resentment, constantly weeping at the shrine of his mother and serving his father with boundless reverence.”
— Book of Jin (Jin Shu), Biography of Wang Xiang
In Chinese cultural folklore, Lady Xue is remembered as the serene and saintly maternal figure whose early absence cast a melancholy shadow over Wang Xiang’s youth, yet whose moral genes inspired his immortal filial deeds upon the frozen river.
