Li Yun was originally a head constable in Yishui County, Shandong. He was highly skilled in martial arts and weaponry, earning the nickname ‘The Blue-Eyed Tiger’ due to his distinct appearance and fierce prowess in combat. He was a close colleague of Zhu Fu (朱富, Chu Phú), who was also a constable. When Zhu Fu’s half-brother, Li Kui (李逵, Lý Quỳ), caused a major incident involving the murder of a gang of outlaws, Li Yun was tasked with escorting Li Kui to the authorities. However, Zhu Fu conspired to rescue Li Kui and managed to drug Li Yun’s food during the journey. Upon waking up to find his prisoner missing and his station burned, Li Yun was forced by circumstance and the persuasion of his peers to defect and join the ranks of the Liangshan outlaws.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Li Yun is a character from the Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan) and not the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his narrative archetype reflects the traditional ‘hero of the path’ often found in Chinese classic literature. As one of the 108 Heroes of Liangshan, he serves as the 97th star, designated as the Earth Flight Star (Dìfēi Xīng). His transition from a law-abiding government official to a rebel mirrors the complex morality of the Liangshan fraternity.
