Biography & Historical Record
Liu Bang (刘邦, Lưu Bang), posthumously known as Emperor Gaozu of Han, was the founder and first emperor of the Han Dynasty. Born into a peasant family in Pei County, he served as a minor local official (tingzhang) before rising to prominence during the chaotic collapse of the Qin Dynasty. He is most famous for defeating his rival Xiang Yu (项羽, Hạng Vũ) in the brutal Chu-Han Contention, ultimately reunifying China under a centralized bureaucratic state. His reign established the foundation for 400 years of Han rule, characterized by a lighter taxation system and the consolidation of Confucianism. He is historically celebrated for his pragmatism, his ability to recruit and delegate to talented figures like Zhang Liang (张良, Trương Lương), Xiao He (萧何, Tiêu Hà), and Han Xin (韩信, Hàn Tín), and for his charismatic leadership style that contrastingly contrasted with the arrogance of the aristocrat Xiang Yu.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Liu Bang is not a character within the events of the late Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms period, he is frequently invoked in the text as a moral benchmark, a cautionary tale, or a political standard. Characters like Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) and Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) are often compared to him, particularly regarding their methods of attracting talent and their claims to legitimacy as ‘restorers’ of order.
