Pan Qiaoyun (潘巧云, Phan Xảo Vân), celebrated in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan) as the ‘Flunkey’s Widow’ (病关索杨雄之妻), was the second wife of Liangshan hero Yang Xiong (Yang Xiong, ‘Fierce Giant’ / 病关索), Chief Warden of Jizhou Prison. Previously married to an imperial clerk who died young, she was renowned throughout Jizhou for her sultry beauty, charm, and vanity.
While Yang Xiong was frequently away guarding the prison, Pan Qiaoyun rekindled an illicit liaison with her former childhood acquaintance, the Buddhist monk Pei Runan (裴如海, Bùi Như Hải) of Haihui Temple. Utilizing a Buddhist ritual at her home as a pretext, she arranged for monk Pei to visit her bedchamber under the cover of night, using an old monk beating a wooden fish outside as an alarm system. When Yang Xiong’s sworn brother Shi Xiu (Shi Xiu, ‘Daredevil’ / 拼命三郎) discovered the adultery, Pan Qiaoyun fabricated malicious lies, claiming Shi Xiu had made drunken sexual advances upon her, prompting Yang Xiong to drive his sworn brother from the house in fury.
Determined to clear his honor, Shi Xiu staked out the alley at dawn, decapitated monk Pei Runan and his accomplice, and took their bloodstained robes to Yang Xiong. Yang Xiong, realizing he had been deceived, lured Pan Qiaoyun and her scheming maidservant Ying’er to the secluded cliffs of Mount Cuiping (翠屏山) under the guise of an incense pilgrimage. Confronted with the monk’s severed garments and trapped upon the crags, Pan Qiaoyun confessed her betrayal. In a gruesome ritual of martial justice, Yang Xiong disemboweled Pan Qiaoyun before the mountain shrine, after which he and Shi Xiu fled toward Mount Liang to join the brotherhood of outlaws.
