Biography & Historical Record
Princess Xiangcheng (襄城公主, Tương Thành công chúa) was an imperial princess of the Western Jin Dynasty, the daughter of the founding emperor Sima Yan (司马炎, Tư Mã Viêm, Emperor Wu of Jin). Renowned for her lofty lineage, imperial refinement, and classical elegance, she was granted the prestigious appanage title of Princess of Xiangcheng.
As part of Emperor Wu’s grand strategy to bind the paramount Langya Wang clan (琅邪临沂王氏) to the Sima imperial throne, Princess Xiangcheng was bestowed in marriage upon the brilliant and ambitious young nobleman Wang Dun (王敦, Vương Đôn, courtesy name Chuji). In connection with this royal union, Wang Dun was appointed Commandant of the Imperial Son-in-Law (Fuma Duwei). Princess Xiangcheng presided over an exceptionally wealthy household in the capital Luoyang; however, Wang Dun was celebrated for his austere martial ethos and fierce ambition, famously distributing her lavish dowry treasures to his officers. Following her death, Wang Dun rose to become paramount military dictator of Eastern Jin.
