Biography & Historical Record
Shi En (施恩, Thi Ân) is a fictional character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Known by the nickname ‘Golden-Eyed Tiger’, he is the son of the jailer Shi Ding (施鼎, Thi Đỉnh) in Mengzhou. Shi En is primarily recognized for his control over the ‘Happy Forest’ (Kuailelin), a bustling area of businesses and restaurants from which he extracted protection money. His status and authority were violently usurped by the strongman Jiang Zhong (蔣忠, Tưởng Trung), also known as ‘Jiang the Door God’. Following a brutal beating by Jiang, Shi En sought the assistance of Wu Song (武松, Võ Tòng), a newly arrived prisoner. Through their collaboration, Shi En reclaimed his territory, cementing a deep, brotherly bond with the martial hero.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Shi En does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as he is a character from the Northern Song period, his archetype as a secondary martial strategist within the Liangshan hierarchy mirrors the loyalty often sought by warlords in the Three Kingdoms era. His role as a jailer turned outlaw highlights the corruption of the Northern Song government, a precursor to the dynastic collapse often compared to the fall of the Han.
