Biography & Historical Record
Song Wan (宋万, Tống Vạn), known by his nickname ‘Cloud-Dwelling Vajra’ (Vân Lý Kim Cương), is a fictional character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He is one of the 108 Heroes of Liangshan and holds the 82nd position as the Earth Demon Star (Di Ma Xing). Before joining the Liangshan band, he was a chieftain at Mount Yellow Flower (Huanghua Shan) alongside Zhu Gui (朱贵, Chu Quý) and Du Qian (杜迁, Đỗ Thiên). Song Wan is noted for his imposing physical stature and his role as a foundational member of the Liangshan hierarchy, having been one of the very first to welcome Wang Lun (王伦, Vương Luân) as the leader of the outlaw community.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While not a historical figure in the Three Kingdoms period, Song Wan represents the archetypal ‘sturdy guard’ found in chivalric literature, paralleling the roles of minor generals in historical military fiction who serve as steadfast anchors during sieges and deployments.
