Biography & Historical Record
Wang Men (王門) was a military officer active during the late Eastern Han dynasty who served under the northern warlord Gongsun Zan before defecting to his chief rival, Yuan Shao.
During the protracted warfare between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao for dominion over northern China (Hebei), Wang Men renounced his allegiance to Gongsun Zan and went over to Yuan Shao’s camp. Yuan Shao subsequently entrusted Wang Men with an army of more than ten thousand infantry and cavalry to capture the strategically situated county of Dongyang (東陽), which was being held on Gongsun Zan’s behalf by Tian Yu.
Upon reaching the walls of Dongyang, Wang Men prepared to lay siege to the fortress. However, Tian Yu mounted the battlements and delivered a biting moral rebuke, reminding Wang Men of the exceptional favor and trust he had previously received from Gongsun Zan. Tian Yu pointed out that even if Wang Men believed his tactical calculation was sound, he had utterly ruined his righteousness and honor as a gentleman. Overcome with shame and realizing the city was prepared for a steadfast defense, Wang Men withdrew his entire army without engaging in battle. Following this event, Wang Men disappears from the historical record.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wang Men is largely omitted, as the intricate regional skirmishes between Gongsun Zan’s lieutenants and Yuan Shao’s forces are condensed to focus primarily on major engagements such as the Battle of Jieqiao and the eventual fall of Yijing.
“You received profound favor from the Gongsun house, yet you turn around to commit rebellion. Even if your self-preservation seems clever, does it not destroy your righteousness?”
— Tian Yu rebuking Wang Men atop the walls of Dongyang (Records of the Three Kingdoms)
