Biography & Historical Record
Zhu Tong is a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally serving as a Constable in Yuncheng County, he was known for his striking appearance—a long, flowing beard that earned him the nickname ‘Beautiful Beard Duke’. Despite being a government official, he was a man of high moral character and deep loyalty. He is celebrated for his role in saving the lives of Chao Gai (晁盖, Triều Cái) and Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) during their times of legal trouble, often risking his own career and freedom to do so.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
As a literary figure in Water Margin, Zhu Tong serves as the archetype of the righteous official who prioritizes personal integrity and loyalty to his ‘brothers’ over cold adherence to the law. His transition from a law-enforcement officer to a rebel leader highlights the theme of injustice within the Song administration.
