Biography & Historical Record
Guanqiu Xiu was a military officer and government official during the late Three Kingdoms period and the early Jin dynasty. Hailing from Wenxi in Hedong Commandery, he was a younger son of the illustrious Cao Wei Grand General Guanqiu Jian and the younger brother of the scholar-official Guanqiu Dian. Documented in Chen Shou’s official dynastic history Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei, Biography of Guanqiu Jian) and Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian, Guanqiu Xiu played an active supporting role during his father’s anti-Sima uprising before becoming famous as the sole surviving male heir who preserved the bloodline of the Guanqiu clan through a daring political escape to Eastern Wu.
In early 255 AD, following regent Sima Shi’s arbitrary deposition of the Wei emperor Cao Fang, Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin launched the Second Rebellion in Huainan from Shouchun to defend the imperial house of Cao Wei. Guanqiu Xiu joined his father and brother Guanqiu Dian in the military effort, serving as a subordinate commander within the rebel army. However, Sima Shi personally commanded a swift and overwhelming counter-offensive, outmaneuvering the rebel forces and causing the uprising to collapse rapidly. As Guanqiu Jian was betrayed and killed on the run, and Guanqiu Dian was captured and executed in Luoyang, Sima Shi ordered a ruthless three-generation extermination of the Guanqiu family across the Central Plains.
Amidst this apocalyptic massacre, Guanqiu Xiu demonstrated extraordinary resolve and survival skills. Accompanied by his young nephew Guanqiu Chong (the son of Guanqiu Dian), Guanqiu Xiu breached the imperial dragnet, fled through the wilderness of the Huainan borderlands, and successfully crossed the Yangtze River to seek political asylum in Eastern Wu. The Eastern Wu court welcomed the political refugees, granting Guanqiu Xiu an official military post to command frontier troops. Decades later, following the Conquest of Wu by the Jin Dynasty under Sima Yan (Emperor Wu of Jin) in 280 AD, an imperial general amnesty was declared for former Wei loyalist descendants. Guanqiu Xiu and his nephew were formally pardoned, allowed to return to their ancestral home in Hedong, and permitted to serve the Jin administration, where Guanqiu Xiu spent his final years in peaceful obscurity.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapter 110 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guanqiu Xiu appears alongside his father Guanqiu Jian and brother Guanqiu Dian during the chaotic suppression of the Second Rebellion in Huainan. Serving as a officer in the Shouchun garrison, he participates in the anti-Sima campaign before the rebel army is routed by Sima Shi’s forces.
Following the crushing defeat at Shouchun and the news of his father’s death, Chapter 110 highlights Guanqiu Xiu’s narrow escape from Sima Shi’s deadly purge. While the Sima clan wipes out three generations of the family in Luoyang and surrounding commanderies, Guanqiu Xiu manages to break through the blockade with his nephew Guanqiu Chong and escape across the river into Eastern Wu. His successful flight ensures that the line of the heroic loyalist Guanqiu Jian survives the brutal transition from Cao Wei to Jin, serving in the novel as a poignant narrative arc of endurance and survival amid political slaughter.
