Liang Gang

Biography & Historical Record

Liang Gang was a military commander who served under the warlord Yuan Shu during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Operating primarily within the Huai River region, he was one of the many mid-level officers tasked with defending Yuan Shu’s ill-fated Zhong Dynasty. Documented in Chen Shou’s official dynastic history Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei, Biography of Yuan Shu) and Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian, Liang Gang’s service is largely defined by his loyalty to the crumbling Yuan Shu regime and his tragic participation in the defense of Shouchun against the imperial forces led by Cao Cao.

As Yuan Shu’s regime descended into tyranny, economic collapse, and isolation following his proclamation as Emperor, his remaining territories were steadily surrounded by stronger regional warlords. Serving under Yuan Shu’s grand command alongside generals such as Li Feng, Yue Jiu, and Qiao Rui, Liang Gang was tasked with protecting the Huainan administrative center. In 199 AD, facing the overwhelming combined military might of Cao Cao’s imperial campaign to eradicate the usurper, Liang Gang and his fellow generals were unable to withstand the relentless siege pressure, leading to their eventual capture and execution.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Chapter 21 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liang Gang is depicted as one of Yuan Shu’s last remaining loyal generals who perished during the final defense of Shouchun, symbolizing the total destruction of Yuan Shu’s pretender empire.

The novel dramatically narrates the final days of Yuan Shu in Chapter 21. As Cao Cao personally leads a grand expedition to purge the usurper Yuan Shu from Shouchun, Yuan Shu desperately mobilizes his remaining defenses. Liang Gang is dispatched alongside fellow officers Li Feng, Yue Jiu, and Qiao Rui to hold the defensive perimeter outside the city. Despite their efforts to rally the demoralized troops, the overwhelming tactical superiority of Cao Cao’s seasoned veterans forces a collapse of the Yuan Shu defense lines.

In the final confrontation, the imperial army launches a successful assault on the city walls. Liang Gang, along with his colleagues Li Feng and Yue Jiu, is overwhelmed and captured alive by Cao Cao’s vanguard forces. Cao Cao, viewing Yuan Shu’s self-proclamation of imperial title as an unforgivable act of treason against the Han mandate, orders the immediate execution of the captive commanders. Liang Gang is dragged to the front of the camp, where he is summarily beheaded to serve as a warning to other potential rebels, marking the definitive end of Yuan Shu’s military capacity and his short-lived Zhong Dynasty.
