The Life and Military Career of Sun Xin
Sun Xin (孫歆) was an imperial general and naval strategist of Eastern Wu during the late Three Kingdoms period. As a member of the royal clan and nephew to the veteran warrior Sun Huan, he rose through the military ranks due to his martial competence along the Yangtze River waterways. Following the passing of Grand Marshal Lu Kang, the southern court appointed him as General Who Conquers the Traitors and Commander-in-Chief of Luoxiang to guard the crucial southern approaches of Jing Province opposite Xiangyang.
The Fall of Luoxiang and Western Jin Invasion
In 280 AD, Emperor Wu of Jin launched a massive multi-pronged campaign led by Grand General Du Yu to subjugate the Wu state. Tasked with holding the frontline, Sun Xin mobilized his garrison to confront the advancing northern divisions. However, Du Yu staged a tactical feigned retreat, baiting the Wu garrison into an overextended pursuit. Under cover of night, Jin commander Zhou Zhi ferried eight hundred elite shock troops across the river on light rafts, planting enemy banners atop Mount Baling and setting signal fires.
When the exhausted Wu troops returned to their stronghold, disguised infiltrators slipped through the city gates and set the military barracks ablaze. Stunned by the inner breach, the commander uttered his famous cry wondering if northern soldiers had flown across the Great River. Zhou Zhi quickly seized the citadel and captured the Wu general, completely shattering the upper river defense line.
