Biography & Historical Record
Wei You (魏攸, died 193) was an administrative official and trusted political advisor serving under Liu Yu (Lưu Ngu), the Grand Commandant and Governor of You Province, during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Originally a native of Right Beiping Commandery (Hữu Bắc Bình), Wei You was highly regarded for his intellect, insight, and strategic prudence.
During his service, Wei You played a critical stabilizing role in the volatile politics of northern China. When tensions escalated between his lord Liu Yu and the powerful warlord Gongsun Zan (Công Tôn Toản), Liu Yu—incensed by Gongsun Zan’s insubordination, cruelty, and independent military actions—resolved to launch a military strike to destroy him. Wei You, however, counselled restraint. According to the Book of the Later Han (Hou Han Shu), Wei You argued:
“Although Gongsun Zan is violent, overbearing, and difficult to control, his military capabilities are formidable. He serves as a vital shield on our northern borders against external barbarians. We should treat him with patience, guide him with virtue, and gently restrain him with our authority. We must not resort to arms hastily, for a civil conflict will only bring ruin to You Province.”
Deeply respecting Wei You’s wisdom and political foresight, Liu Yu heeded his advice and aborted the planned campaign. For as long as Wei You lived, he acted as a crucial buffer, preventing open warfare between the two factions. However, in the year 193, Wei You died of illness. Left without his chief advisor’s moderating influence and counsel, a frustrated Liu Yu ultimately mobilized an army of 100,000 soldiers to attack Gongsun Zan. Devoid of military expertise, Liu Yu was soundly defeated, captured, and subsequently executed by Gongsun Zan, verifying Wei You’s grim predictions.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wei You is a minor historical figure, with his historical warnings to Liu Yu compressed or omitted to focus on the direct conflict between Gongsun Zan and Liu Yu. However, his legacy remains that of a tragic ‘what-if’ figure whose timely death paved the way for the total collapse of Liu Yu’s benign administration in You Province.
“Had Wei You lived, the gentle rule of Liu Yu might have survived, and the northern borders would not have fallen so quickly into the ruthless hands of Gongsun Zan.”
