Biography & Historical Record
Dong Heng (董衡, died 219 AD) was a military officer serving under the warlord Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He served as a subordinate commander under the fierce general Pang De during the pivotal campaign in Jing Province.
In the autumn of 219 AD, Guan Yu launched an offensive against Cao Ren at Fancheng. In response, Cao Cao dispatched General of the Left Yu Jin and General Pang De with seven armies to relieve the besieged garrison. Heavy autumnal downpours caused the Han River to overflow its banks, completely inundating the low-lying plains and submerging the camps of the Wei forces. While Yu Jin and the bulk of the troops were isolated and eventually forced to capitulate, Pang De rallied his men—including Dong Heng and another officer named Dong Chao (董超)—to make a desperate stand on a remnant embankment.
Surrounded by Guan Yu’s waterborne forces and under heavy bombardment of arrows, Dong Heng and Dong Chao realized that their tactical situation was entirely hopeless and proposed surrendering to Guan Yu to spare their remaining soldiers. However, Pang De was fiercely loyal to Cao Cao and refused to waver. Viewing their suggestion as high treason and an act of cowardice that threatened the resolve of his surviving men, Pang De summarily executed both Dong Heng and Dong Chao on the spot before continuing his fight to the death.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dong Heng appears in Chapter 74 during the dramatic Battle of Fancheng. As Guan Yu directs the floodwaters to engulf the seven armies, Pang De and a handful of soldiers retreat to a small dyke. Observing the utter devastation and seeing Guan Yu’s naval vessels approach from all sides, Dong Heng urges Pang De to surrender.
“Our forces are drowned, our arrows exhausted, and there is no avenue of escape. General Guan Yu is unmatched in valor; it would be wise to surrender and preserve our lives.”
Hearing this, Pang De flew into a violent fury, shouting that he would rather die as a loyal ghost of the King of Wei than live as a captive traitor. He immediately drew his sword and decapitated Dong Heng and Dong Chao before the assembled troops, terrifying the survivors into fighting alongside him until the bitter end.
