Biography & Historical Record
Li Shao (died 225 AD), courtesy name Yongnan, was a prominent civil official of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He hailed from Qi County, Guanghan Commandery (present-day Santai County, Sichuan). Li Shao was born into an influential intellectual family and, along with his brothers Li Chao (courtesy name Weinan) and another brother who died early (courtesy name Jinan), was collectively praised as one of the “Three Lis of Guanghan” (廣漢三李) for their exceptional talent and administrative capabilities.
Following Liu Bei’s pacification of Yi Province in 214 AD, Li Shao entered public service, quickly earning a reputation for his meticulous work ethic and integrity. When Zhuge Liang assumed the role of Chancellor of Shu Han, he recognized Li Shao’s administrative excellence and appointed him as the Zhi Zhong Cong Shi (治中從事 – Attendant Officer of the Headquarters), a crucial role overseeing the internal administration and governance of the province. Li Shao served diligently in this post, assisting in maintaining domestic stability and logistics. Unfortunately, in 225 AD, just as Zhuge Liang was preparing for his Southern Expedition against the Nanman rebel forces, Li Shao fell seriously ill and passed away. Zhuge Liang deeply mourned his untimely death, lamenting the loss of an invaluable administrator.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, Li Shao appears briefly in Chapter 87. Among these appointments, Zhuge Liang selects Li Shao to serve as the Attendant Officer (Zhi Zhong) to help oversee the capital’s administrative affairs, highlighting his trustworthiness and capability.
