Biography & Historical Record
Ma Liang, courtesy name Changji, was an official and strategist of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. A native of Yicheng in Xiangyang Commandery, he was the fourth and most famous of the five Ma brothers, all of whom possessed exceptional talent, leading to the local popular saying: ‘Among the Ma brothers, the white-browed one is the most superlative.’ Because Ma Liang had white hairs mixed into his eyebrows from a young age, he was widely known by the nickname ‘White Eyebrow’. He was initially recommended by Sima Hui and entered the service of Liu Bei when Liu Bei governed Jing Province.
Recognized for his brilliance, integrity, and profound strategic insights, Ma Liang became one of Liu Bei’s most trusted confidants and advisors. He was appointed as an official in Jing Province and later served as an attendant military adviser. In 221 AD, when Liu Bei launched a massive military campaign against Eastern Wu to avenge the death of Guan Yu, Ma Liang was dispatched to pacify the indigenous tribes and local leaders in the Wuling region, successfully securing their alliance and allegiance to Shu Han. During the disastrous Battle of Yiling, Ma Liang served as a key strategist advising Liu Bei on setting up military camps across the forests and mountains. When Liu Bei’s forces were annihilated by Lu Xun’s fire attack, Ma Liang attempted to escape back to Shu but was tragically killed in action on the battlefield at the age of thirty-six. His younger brother was the renowned strategist Ma Su.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Ma Liang is introduced in Chapter 39 as a brilliant scholar from Jing Province. Zhuge Liang immediately recognizes his exceptional talent and brings him into Liu Bei’s service. Ma Liang plays a crucial role throughout Liu Bei’s campaigns in Jing Province and the seizure of Yi Province. When Liu Bei prepares for his fateful expedition against Eastern Wu in Chapter 81 to avenge Guan Yu, Ma Liang earnestly advises against the campaign, warning Liu Bei about the dangers of camping in the dense woods along the river. Liu Bei dismisses his wise counsel in a fit of anger, though he assigns Ma Liang to secure alliances with the local tribes. When the tragic fire attack destroys the Shu army at Yiling in Chapter 84, Ma Liang is cut off and slain amidst the chaos. Before his death, he sends a map of the military camps to Zhuge Liang, immortalizing his loyal dedication to the state.
