Lin Xiangru (蔺相如, Lận Tương Như) was a prominent statesman and diplomat of the State of Zhao during the Warring States period. He is celebrated as one of the most intellectually courageous figures in Chinese history, renowned for his unwavering loyalty and sharp wit in defending the dignity of his state against the expansionist power of the State of Qin. His fame largely stems from the story of ‘Returning the Jade Intact’ (Wan Bi Gui Zhao), where he successfully navigated a treacherous diplomatic situation involving the precious He Shi Bi jade. Later, during the Mianchi meeting, he forced the King of Qin to acknowledge the equal status of the King of Zhao, effectively preventing diplomatic humiliation. His partnership with General Lian Po (廉颇, Liêm Pha) is legendary; specifically, the idiom ‘Carrying thorns on one’s back to seek forgiveness’ (Fu Jing Qing Zui) highlights his humility and willingness to prioritize state interests over personal pride, as he intentionally avoided conflict with the boastful general to maintain national stability.
