Zhang Liang (張良) was a prominent founding father and statesman of the Han Dynasty, celebrated as one of the “Three Heroes of Early Han” alongside Xiao He and Han Xin. Born into nobility in the State of Han, he dedicated his life to seeking vengeance after his homeland was annexed by the Qin. Following an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang at Bolangsha, he went into hiding and encountered Huangshigong (Lord Yellow Stone), who bestowed upon him Taigong’s Art of War. Zhang Liang was renowned for his extraordinary ability to “devise strategies within a command tent to ensure victory a thousand miles away.” He was instrumental in convincing Liu Bang to place his trust in Han Xin, devised the scheme that saved Liu Bang’s life at the Feast at Hong Gate, and formulated the grand strategies to divide and weaken Hegemon-King Xiang Yu of Chu, enabling Liu Bang to unify China.

Although Zhang Liang belonged to the early Han era, characters throughout Romance of the Three Kingdoms—most notably Zhuge Liang—are frequently compared to him as the gold standard of a master strategist. He endures in Chinese history as the quintessential symbol of wisdom, composure, and far-reaching foresight.
